While a regular denture rests on gum tissues, an implant-supported denture is attached to and supported by dental implants. For individuals that do not have any teeth in their jaw, but still have enough bone density within the jaw to support implants, an implant-supported denture helps them build the smile that they want and deserve. What’s more is that implants provide superior support for the denture, which optimizes comfort and stability.
Like conventional dentures, implant supported dentures are removable. Colgate explains two types of implant-supported dentures—bar-retained and ball-retained. A bar-retained denture consists of a thin metal bar that runs along the curvature of an individual’s jaw, and is attached to implants (usually 2-5) using a clip or other attachment. Essentially, the denture fits over the bar and is secured into place by the attachments.
On the contrary, when each dental implant holds a metal attachment that securely fits into another attachment on the denture, this is a ball-retained type of denture. Often, the attachment on the actual implant is ball shaped, and designed to fit into socket attachments located on the denture.
The process of placing dental implants varies from individual to individual, and depends upon their need for preliminary dental care, and if they are receiving placement in the upper jaw, lower jaw or both. Thus, the average time frame for completing the process ranges from five months to one year. Furthermore, the process usually requires two surgeries—one to place the dental implants and one to expose the tops of the implants in order to place the denture.
Though implant-supported dentures require a personal commitment to good oral health and an investment in one’s time, they are a remarkable way to restore one’s smile. What’s more is that they do not require sticky adhesives, and individuals needn’t worry about their dentures shifting or loosening over time. Finally, implant-supported dentures stimulate bone growth in the jaw, providing a fuller, more youthful appearance.
